It was launched in 2014 when India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested the idea during a speech at the United Nations. The proposal received strong support, in which 177 countries supported it, and the first Yoga Day was celebrated on 21 June 2015.
The date was chosen as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and many cultures have special meanings. Since then, people from all over the world participate in yoga sessions and events on this day. To mark the occasion, India issued ₹ 10 coins in 2015, and the United Nations released special tickets showing different yoga in 2017.
