Language teachers highlight the importance of mastery in four consecutive main language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. These skills serve as foundations for effective communication and understanding. Whether someone is learning a new language or refining its origin, developing these abilities is important to express ideas clearly, understand complex information and create meaningful connections. With regular practice and proper guidance, these skills open doors for personal development, educational achievement and smooth interactions in today’s multicultural world.

Four basic language skills

Language teachers often rely on the structure of four basic language skills such as making strong communication abilities in learning, learning, speaking and writing. These skills make the origin of language learning and are essential for effective teaching and understanding. By developing all four areas in balance, students can improve their overall language proficiency and confidently engage in both educational and everyday conversations. Four basic language skills are mentioned below.

  2. Speaking
  3. Reading
  4. Write

Relationship Parameter – Four Basic Language Skills

Four basic language skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing are interconnected through two major parameters: mode of communication. Mode means whether communication is oral (listening and speaking) or written (reading and writing). The direction of communication throws light on whether a person is receiving a message (as in listening and reading) or producing one (as in speaking and writing). Understanding these parameters helps to design effective language learning strategies and ensure balanced skill development .. These parameters are mentioned below.

  • Method of communication: oral or written
  • Direction of communication: obtaining or producing messages

Four basic language skills in details

Hear

Listening understanding is receptive skills in oral mode. When we talk about listening to what we really mean, we have to listen and understand what we hear.

Hearing

There are two types of hearing conditions in which we find ourselves

  1. Interactive, and
  2. Non -communicable

Interactive hearing involves real-time communication where there are both listening and speaking, such as face-to-face conversation or phone calls. These conditions allow the listener to ask for explanation, recurrence, or slow speech. In contrast, non-inactive hearing refers to one-way communication such as radio shows, TV programs, movies, lectures, or preaching, where there is no immediate opportunity to join or explore with the speaker.

Micro – Skills

Richards (1983, Omagio, quoted in 1986) proposes that the following are micro -cycles that are involved in understanding what someone says to us. Listener has to do

  • Maintain fragmentation of language in short term memory
  • Discrimination between specific sounds in new language
  • Identify stress and rhythm patterns, tone patterns and international controls.
  • Identify the fewer forms of words
  • Word boundaries distinguish
  • Identify specific words – order pattern
  • Identify the vocabulary
  • Find out the major words, such as identifying subjects and ideas
  • Estimate the meaning from the context
  • Identify grammatical word classes
  • Identify basic syntax pattern
  • Identify harmonious equipment
  • Find the sentence component, such as subject, verb object, preamble, and thus

Speaking

Speaking is a productive skill in oral mode. It, like other skills, is more complex than before and contains only more than accent words.

Speaking status

There are three types of speaking status in which we find ourselves

  • Interactive,
  • Partially interactive, and
  • Non – Interactive.

Interactive speaking conditions include the face – to face conversations and telephone calls, listening and speaking alternately, and in which we have a chance to ask for our conversation partner for clarification, repetition, or slow speech. Some speaking positions are partially interactive, such as while giving speech to the live audience, where the conference is that the audience is not interrupted in speech. The speaker can still see the audience with manifestations on their face and body language and whether they are being understood.

Some speaking status can be completely non -conversion, such as recording speech for radio broadcasting.

Micro – Skills

There are some micro -cycles involved in speaking here. Speaker has to do

  • The pronunciation of specific sounds of a language is clearly enough so that people can separate them. This includes distinction.
  • Use stress and rhythmic patterns, and the intony pattern of the language clearly enough to understand what people can understand what is said.
  • Use the correct forms of words. This may mean, for example, changes in the case of stress, or gender.
  • Keep words together in the correct word order.
  • Use the vocabulary properly.
  • Use the diversity of the register or language that is suitable for the position and the relationship of the conversation partner.
  • Explain the listener to the main sentence component, such as subject, verb and object, whoever uses language.
  • Stand out the main ideas out of supportive thoughts or information.
  • Hang the discourse together so that people can follow what you are saying.

Reading

Reading is a receptive skill in written mode. This can develop listening and speaking skills independently, but often develops with them, especially in societies with a high -developed literary tradition. Reading can help in creating vocabulary that helps listen to understanding especially in stages.

Micro – Skills

There are some micro -cycles involved in reading here. The reader has to do

  • Understand the script. In a alphabet system or a course, it means establishing a relationship between sounds and symbols. In a pictograph system, it means adding the meaning of words with written symbols.
  • Identify the vocabulary.
  • Choose keywords, such as identifying subjects and main ideas.
  • (Written) Find out the meaning of words including unfamiliar vocabulary from reference.
  • Identify grammatical word classes: nouns, adjectives, etc.
  • Find the sentence component, such as subject, verb object, east, etc.
  • Identify the original syntax pattern.
  • Reconstruction and estimates of situations, goals and participants.
  • Use both knowledge and lexical and grammatical harmonious equipment, which predict the results, predict the results, and estimate links and connections between parts of the text.
  • Get the main point or most important information.
  • Separate the main idea from the support details.
  • Adjust reading strategies for various reading purposes, such as skimming or depth study for main ideas.

Write

Writing is a productive skill in written mode. It is also more complex than before, and often seems to be the most difficult of skills, even for native speakers of a language, as it not only involves a graphic representation of speech, but also develops and presentation of ideas in a structured manner.

Micro – Skills

There are some micro -cycles involved in writing here. The author needs

  • Properly use orthography including script, spelling and punctuation.
  • Use the correct forms of words. This can mean the use of forms that express the right time, or case or gender.
  • Keep words together in the correct word order.
  • Use the vocabulary correctly.
  • Use the style and the suitable style for the audience.
  • The main sentence component, such as subject, verb and object, clarify the reader.
  • Make the main different from supporting ideas or information.
  • Make the lesson consistent, so that other people can follow the development of ideas.
  • The judge audience does not have the background knowledge and makes it clear what it is believed they do not know.
