The National Education Policy 2020 has revised the education structure from the old educational structure of 10+2 system to 5+3+3+4 system. The 10+2 structure of the school curriculum is to be replaced by a 5+3+3+4 curriculum structure, with emphasis on early childhood care and education. Earlier the education system in school was known as 10+2, which denoted 10 years of secondary education and 2 years of higher secondary education, after which students were eligible to take admission in colleges for graduation and higher studies . The new system will have three years of Anganwadi/pre-schooling along with 12 years of schooling. Here we are going to know more about the new education system i.e. 5+3+3+4 system.

What does 5+3+3+4 school system mean?
- 5- 5 years- Foundation Stage (students aged 3 to 8 years) including pre-school and classes 1 and 2
- 3- 3 years- Early stage which includes classes 3 to 5 (students aged 8 to 11)
- 3- 3 years- Middle Stage (students aged 11 to 14), including grades 6 to 8
- 4- 4 years- Secondary stage including classes 9 to 12 (students aged 14 to 18)
Former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan led the committee to develop the new education policy and the 2020 policy replaced the 34-year-old National Policy on Education (NPE) that was first formulated in 1986.
NEP 2020 School Guidelines
- Preparatory class/kindergarten for children of 5-6 years in Anganwadis/pre-schools
- School Preparation Module for all Class 1 entrants

- The NPE 2020 states that adequate focus should be given to Indian and regional languages and as per the new policy Sanskrit language will be mainstreamed in the education system.
- School curriculum and pedagogy shall aim at holistic development of learners By equipping them with key 21scheduled tribe Reduction in curricular content and greater focus on experiential learning to enhance century skills, essential learning and critical thinking.
- Vocational education will start in schools from 6thth grad, and will include an internship.
- a new and broader National Curriculum Framework for School EducationNCFSE 2020-21 will be developed by NCERT.
- This system of education will be “competency-based” and is designed to impart the importance of learning and development testing, critical thinking, analysis and conceptual clarity to enhance the education system.
- As per the guidelines of the new education policy, school students will have to appear for the exams only for classes 3, 5 and 8. For the remaining years, assessment will follow the “regular and formative” style.
- The idea behind introducing the new education policy is to make the education system more flexible, multidisciplinary and holistic which will make India a global knowledge hub.
- As per the NEP proposal, students will also have the option to exit during class 10 and re-enter later in class 11. The new policy will focus on emerging curricular, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities throughout the school life to make students all-round.
- NCERT will develop a National Curriculum and Educational Framework for Early Childhood Care and Education (NCPFECCE) For children up to 8 years of age.
To promote new skills, states and local communities have decided to start classes for metallurgy, gardening, pottery, carpentry, electrical work and other daily and useful tasks. It aims to emphasize vocational education in the new education system and NEP 2020 aims to provide vocational education to at least 50% of the students by 2025.
With the implementation of the new education policy, the name of Ministry of Human Resource Development will be changed to Ministry of Education and the main objective behind this new policy is to focus on learning and education.
